Irving was born February 5, 1931, in Seattle, WA, to George and Capy Vik. He was raised in Sedro-Woolley, WA, and graduated from Western Washington College in Bellingham. He met the love of his life, Della M. Fernie, and was married in 1952. Irving was a Korean wartime veteran, serving on the Murphy Dome DEW Line radar site in Alaska while in the Air National Guard. He continued his education, earning his Master's in Education at Eastern Washington College.

Irving began a career teaching school in Shelton in 1954, and was a principal of elementary and middle schools in Fall City and Twisp. He retired from the Naches School District in 1982. He and Della had already moved in 1978 to a small farm in Wapato and grew apples and grapes for 19 years. After retiring from the farm, they moved to their present home in Gleed.

Irving was a member of the Agate Grange, Toastmasters in Shelton, Naches Lions Club, and the United Methodist Church and Sons of Norway Lodge in Yakima.

He is survived by his wife, Della; his children, James and Kathy Vik from Eagle River, Alaska, Lorna and David Peterson from Moose, Wyoming, and Janice and Barry Rosenkranz from Yakima, Washington; eight grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
